GR’s Local Businesses Need Us Now

Dear Grand Rapidians,

Stay home. That is the simple instruction we all need to follow to do our part and help slow the spread of the Coronavirus upending our community. Sadly, a major downside of staying home is the tragic blow it delivers to our small local businesses. In the coming weeks and months, our favorite restaurants, shops, salons, pubs and other hardworking local businesses will experience a precipitous decline in visitors, customers and sales. Individual livelihoods and the character of our neighborhoods and business districts are at stake.

While COVID-19 will upend our small local business sector, there are things we can do right now—largely without leaving home—to help our local businesses manage through the crisis and survive.

This is why we launched Love Local GR: a tool to empower our community to support our local businesses from the comfort of your own home. Click here to learn how it works.

Purchasing gift cards, ordering food to go or for delivery (and tipping well), shopping online or contributing to an emergency support fund for employees. These are just a few ways we can help.

These are difficult times. But I know we’re up to the challenge. Take care of yourselves. Take care of your family and neighbors. And let’s take care of our local small businesses and their workers—the heart of our local economy.

Sincerely,

Rosalynn Bliss

Mayor, City of Grand Rapids

Ten Point Plan for Safe Takeout & Delivery

Some may rightly wonder if it’s safe to order takeout or delivery food. This pandemic clearly presents new risks to our daily life. Ways to mitigate that risk also exist. Here are some good practices for ordering and enjoying takeout and delivery food as safely as possible:

  1. Keep your distance from other people

  2. Wash your hands

  3. Think twice about using cash & communal pens

  4. Wash your hands

  5. Discard food packaging as soon as possible

  6. Wash your hands

  7. Tip generously (delivery workers are at high risk)

  8. Wash your hands

  9. Use your home plates & utensils

  10. Wash your hands
